No doubt you have a monthly list based on general weather patterns for your area and what exactly you want to plant. April is a time to plant trees and shrubs. However, by mid month it will be a little late to transplant large trees or shrubs, so you should do it now. This months is ideal for pruning evergreens. So if you have a Juniper, Cypress or conifer that need shearing or pruning this is a good time to accomplish this task. Fisrt of all you have to remove all dead, diseased, and undesirable wood. However, do not prune back into the bare wood part of the plant. April is also April is a great time to select and plant fruit trees and berry plants.

April is the month for planting summer flowering bulbs like dahlias, gladiolas and lilies. Mix bulb fertilizer, processed manure and peat moss into the planting soil. Tuberous Begonias and Canna should not be set outdoors until all danger of frost has passed, so wait until next month.
Plant annual seeds of asters, cosmos, marigolds, zinnias in the garden.
When all frost danger has passed you can move your stored fuchsias and geraniums outdoors. Trim them back, feed and re-pot if necessary. Water them well.

There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling.

Interesting and looking for green gardering advices I’ve found 250 Tips for an Eco Lifestyle book FROM the Little Green Book series where I found answers on most of my quastions. If you want to learn how to make choices that affect not only your own life but the planet as a whole, this is for you. The Little Green Book of Gardening contains 250 tips on such subjects as organic growing, lawn care, wildlife gardening, gardening power and products, water and garden waste. Theres great advice on everything from the ins and outs of watering your lawn and digging your garden green to making your own compost and practising green pest control. Be sure you can buy tthi useful book online, on barnesandnoble.com right now for $10 only.

Here is some of cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for eco-gardening and large-scale landscaping projects, offered by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Make your garden a place for good conservation and environmental savings, getting economic at he same time. If yard waste is managed properly, a garden environment can not be enhanced but also help you save money.

Use shredded untreated wood and leaf wastes converted into chips as mulch on garden beds. This would help prevent weed growth, retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and add nutrients back to the soil

You can use recycled materials – like wood scraps and cardboard – for building a backyard fort or tree-house for your children, giving them an eco-friendly atmosphere.

Purchase recycled-content gardening equipment and tools. Some fo such equipments are like,

– garden hoses made from old tires.

– stepping stones made from old glass bottles.

– hand tools made with recycled plastic.

– plastic lumber made from recycled plastic bottles and bags — to make flower beds, trellises, decks and birdhouses.

Recycle used oil and tires from lawn and garden equipment.

Maintain your lawn mower and other gardening equipment regularly. Always keep them in efficient operating condition. When refilling your lawn mower, use a nozzle that prevents fuel spills and get wasted unused. To save fuel and protect the air quality, use manual tools.

Don’t bag the grass clippings; leave them on your lawn instead. You can also use a mulching mower. The clippings will return nutrients to the soil rather than take up space in landfills.

Protect young seedlings from frost, wind, heavy rain, and roving animals by reusing plastic milk jugs, just by cutting the bottoms off, or else use small paper bags for the purpose. And, once the seedlings have grown, recycle the bags and jugs for sure.

Donate healthy plants to community gardens or schools, or gift them to neighbors.

Introduce ladybugs as they will eat aphids.

Plant marigolds to ward off beetles.

Look for quick-sprouting plants that help block weed growth.30647
